Frequently Asked Questions:
What are Polarized lenses?
Polarized lenses are used in sunglasses to reduce glare from reflective surfaces such as the surface of water or the hood of a car. They accomplish this through a process called polarization, much like a Venetian blind controls sunlight through a window. Sunlight itself is not polarized - light from the sun will either be absorbed or reflected horizontally, diagonally or vertically. The problem this causes lies in the horizontal reflectivity. Sunlight bouncing off a horizontal surface will strike the viewer's eyes at a similar angle. This means the glare from the surface of the water or the road or the car hood will be B. Polarized lenses have a laminated surface containing vertical stripes. These stripes only allow vertically-polarized light to enter the wearer's eyes. Glare is eliminated because the horizontally-polarized lightwaves cannot bypass the polarized filter.
What is UV Protection?
The sun emits ultraviolet radiation which is damaging to the eyes. Lenses with ultraviolet protection prevent that harmful radiation from touching your eyes. Polycarbonate, high index, polarized, and sun-sensitive lenses all automatically contain UV protection. Hard resin lenses need an additional coating to add UV protection. According to United States Federal law, all sunglasses sold in the United States must have UV protection. However, many low-priced sunglasses for sale through street vendors do not comply with this rule. Using tinted lenses without UV protection is extremely damaging to your eyes, because the dark tint causes your pupils to dilate and increases the surface area of your retina that can be damaged by the ultraviolet radiation.
Things you should know about Sunglasses
EyeglassesAndShades.com, the internet’s largest retailer of discount designer sunglasses offers over 30 brands of sunglasses at prices discounted as much as 20-60% off retail. We carry hot designer sunglass brands such as Adidas, Chopard, Gucci, D&G, Dolce Gabbana, Dior, Prada and Tom Ford, well as the ultra-cool sport sunglass brands such as Ray Ban. All of these brands are always offered at a discount!
There are many different lens and frame technologies on the market today. When choosing a frame/lens, be sure to pick sunglasses that fit close to your face and works with your lifestyle. Active people may be better off with a plastic frame and polycarbonate plastic lens, as they are more impact resistant and lightweight as compared to glass lenses which are heavier and scratch resistant. Many sunglasses also have polarized, mirrored and photochromic lenses to provide extra protection in high light situations.
Most importantly, sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful Ultraviolet radiation (UV). UV radiation comes naturally from the sun and is comprised of invisible rays that can be classfied into three different types. The three bands of UV light are: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA & UVB are the ray one should be concerned with when purchasing sunglasses. When our eyes are exposed to direct sunlight, these rays can be damaging to the cornea and retina and can eventually cause cataracts. Wearing sunglasses reduces the strain on the eyes, eliminates the sun’s glare and, therefore, reduces the chance of getting cataracts. When purchasing a pair of sunglasses, be sure the lenses block at least 98% of these UV rays. Many of the higher quality sunglass lenses on the market claim to block 100% of these damaging rays. ALL of the discount sunglasses available for sale at EyeglassesAndShades.com provide 98-100% protection from harmful UV radiation.
